Let’s face it, we have all been guilty of trying a quick fix when it comes to whitening our teeth.  With thousands of products available, it’s easy to fall into the trap of using over the counter whiteners as a “great” option.  We see a range of products including gels, rinses, toothpastes, paint on films and strips and even chewing gum available right at our fingertips.  Advertisers are clever, and we have been told that these products will actually work, and that they are the less expensive choice.  Truth be told, however, whitening with McCall Family Dentistry is truly the only option that will actually yield the results you want!   Did you know the average consumer spends anywhere from $200-$300 a year on over the counter products that leave them less than satisfied?  In fact, some consumers see no results at all!   Most of these products only address what is called light staining.  However, whitening with Dr. Ryan can give you guaranteed results in about an hour.

Professional whitening is so effective because it is done when your teeth have been cleaned and plaque and tartar have been removed.  Then, most external stains are removed.  The whitening agent then bleaches the remaining extrinsic stains as well as the intrinsic stains, those which lie deep in the tooth enamel.  A nice smile attracts people, and your smile can affect both your social and professional life.  A whiter smile can boost your confidence and self-esteem.  It is also a non-invasive way to look younger!  We associate whiter teeth with youth and beauty.  A study published in Berlin showed that people guess the age of a happy smiling person as younger than a photo of the same person with a neutral or unhappy face.  A brighter smile scientifically makes you look younger!

We all want to maintain proper oral health, that is why we make sure to the dentists at McCall Family Dentistry twice a year.  Patients who whiten their teeth tend to take better care of their oral health when it comes to brushing, flossing and making sure to make their bi-yearly appointments.  In addition, with whitening the removal of stains actually strengthens your teeth and improves the overall health of your gums.  Over the counter products can be detrimental to your overall oral health, causing damage to gum tissue and increased sensitivity.  In addition, using these products can also result in uneven results.  Whitening with Dr. Ryan provides a personal touch with customization to fit your needs.  There is no one size fits all when you whiten with our team of professionals.  It is important to have trays that are based on impressions from your teeth, and that you have the option to choose the shade you want.  Patients who choose to whiten with McCall Family Dentistry see significant results from the get go!

So, why do consumers keep choosing products that they can buy at their local grocery or drug store?  While it is true that over the counter products do contain some whitening peroxide, it is only about 3%.  However, Dr. Ryan has the access to professional strength whiteners with about 35% whitening peroxide. Whitening with him and his hygiene team will show an immediate effect and is certainly more thorough than choosing the white strips at the end of the aisle.   You may ask, what about the charcoal toothpaste… Well, it’s very similar to all of the other over the counter products, in that it can address surface stains.  The active ingredient is not in contact with the surface of your teeth long enough to have an impact on whitening your teeth.  In addition, prolonged used of this type of toothpaste can cause damage to your enamel due to its abrasive qualities.   Bottom line…charcoal toothpaste will never equal an in office whitening treatment at McCall Family Dentistry.

A last buyer beware…recently, consumers have even been offered whitening treatments in non-dental related settings such as kiosks, salons and spas. Non-dental whitening venues have come under scrutiny in several states.  Following proper protocol is of the utmost importance to Dr. Ryan, who knows your health history.   Appointments are as easy to make as picking up an over the counter product at the store.

Let’s be honest, a lot of the things we most enjoy can stain our teeth.  However, you don’t have to give up your cup of coffee in the morning or your glass of red wine at the end of the day! You can maintain a white and natural looking smile with a professional whitening procedure performed at McCall Family Dentistry.  We offer a wide variety of whitening treatments to suit your needs and your lifestyle!  Our team provides something for everyone from the basic package to the radiant white package. It is up to you to choose the treatment you want from McCall Family Dentistry.  Be sure to check out all of the whitening services we offer on our website and make an appointment today!
